We Care Elementary
Designed for students in grades 3–6, typically ages 8–12
Children in this age range (3rd through 6th grades) have a robust set of developmental tasks. Children develop awareness of self as well as of peers and social groups. With this newfound awareness comes the capacity for empathy and establishing their ideas about how to be in the world and how to treat others. Physiologically, children are approaching puberty and beginning to wonder about sexual development. All of these factors make sexual abuse prevention especially timely for this age group and make it especially important that the content is delivered in a developmentally appropriate way.
The most common time to receive a cell phone is during the upper elementary school years. This is also a time of navigating online gaming, where children find themselves interacting, potentially at an international level, with a diverse range of players. This is also the time for children to develop a sense of empathy with people in an online setting, set and respect online boundaries, and navigate the internet and sites that they may not be developmentally able to fully comprehend.
The We Care Elementary curriculum includes six lessons at each grade level. Each grade focuses on different topics related to healthy relationships. We Care Elementary moves beyond the concrete, physical nature of the Care for Kids lessons, capitalizing on children’s capacity to generalize information and reflect on their emotions and experiences. Woven through the grades are conversations about relationships that occur face-to-face and/or online.
