SAFE-T
Sexual Abuse Free Environment for Teens™

Designed for students in grades 7–12, typically ages 12–18

The Sexual Abuse Free Environment for Teens™ (SAFE-T) program was developed by Prevent Child Abuse Vermont to promote healthy relationships, positive behaviors, and safer middle school communities. Through ten developmentally appropriate lessons, SAFE-T helps young adolescents build social-emotional skills while exploring topics such as boundaries, sexual harassment, healthy relationships, and sexually abusive behaviors.

Early adolescence is an important time for prevention education. Young people are beginning to make more independent decisions about their relationships, sexuality, and behavior, while also navigating increased influence from peers, media, and other social pressures. SAFE-T gives adolescents the knowledge and skills to recognize when boundaries are crossed, make healthy choices, and support their peers.

The curriculum also emphasizes the important role of active bystanders. By encouraging young people to speak up, seek help, and support one another when something doesn’t feel right, SAFE-T helps foster caring, respectful peer communities.

Early adolescence is also a unique opportunity for prevention. Young adolescents are developing greater independence, abstract thinking, and their own understanding of relationships, ethics, and values. SAFE-T meets students at this stage of development with opportunities to learn, reflect, discuss, and build practical skills in a safe and supportive environment.
